App Review: Waze

WAZE TRAFFIC APP OFFICIAL REVIEW

Image result for waze

In an effort to share some of my FAVORITE things with you all, I decided to pick my current favorite new app to do a review on!

I have always been one to just open up the Google Maps app on my phone and roll with that. Don't get me wrong, there's certainly nothing wrong with that app. It's reliable and most everyone uses it. However, I was recently told about Waze and I decided to give it a shot.

THE PURPOSE OF ME USING WAZE

I don't use the Waze to get to work in terms of needing directions, but I did need something to alert me to traffic delays and/or possible congested areas due to accidents and such since I commute to AND from work during rush hours and am constantly running into DEAD STOPPED traffic with no warning, which makes me 2-5 minutes late to work more often than I care to have happen.

SOME REALLY USEFUL FEATURES

The cool thing about Waze is that it's a community-based traffic app, so other drivers are sharing information about accidents, cars pulled over on the shoulder, traffic stops, etc. real-time so that everyone is aware of what's coming up. Also, Waze isn't scared to take you off the beaten path to get to your destination in the quickest amount of time! I actually REALLY love this part of the app because I've gotten to see some areas of Tampa that I hadn't seen before. Haha. All of a sudden the Navigation will redirect you to save you a few minutes when it gets notice of a traffic slow-down and it will occasionally take you through residential areas to get there. I've seen some of the coolest houses around here that I'm sure I never would have stumbled across otherwise.

If you're a business person and you know that your colleagues use Waze, you can send them messages if you're all connected to Facebook. How cool would it be to be able to send or receive a quick message saying that you're 3 minutes delayed to your meeting due to an accident on the road! With Waze, it's easy to do that.

Another cool thing is that Waze also remembers what time you usually do things. For example, if I open up my app at the same time every morning, it knows that I'm going to work and it will automatically start my navigation to work. Now, if I happen to be going somewhere else I just have to change it; but how cool that it remembers where you are usually headed to and it's ready to just point you in the right direction as soon as you open it up!

Plus, how cute is this interface?! I love it!

FINAL THOUGHTS

This innovative app is definitely the navigation app of the future. Sorry Google maps, I've found something that gets me to my destination quicker! I really enjoy the varied routes that Waze is willing to take me on to get my to my destination as quickly as possible, and I appreciate the ability to be able to communicate with other Waze users, report traffic incidents in real-time to help other drivers, and just the overall ease of use of this app. I have to say that I haven't opened Google Maps since I've started using Waze and I'm pretty sure I won't be. I'm an official "Waze-believer"!

Try it out! Let me know what you think!

Let's Talk About Poop!

POOP!!!!!

Image result for toilet paper roll

Ok.....now that that's out of the way and we're comfortable with that word, let's chat.

If there is one thing I hope to accomplish through this blog it's to make it informative about health. Not just fitness, but overall health. As a coach, that's truly my driving force...I don't want to just make you sweat (haha), I want to watch you come off of medications, to have more energy in your everyday activities, to feel like you have more LIFE to live! Basically just to really teach us all how to live healthier, more fulfilling lives!

So, that means that we have to talk about LOTS of different areas of health and how we can identify things that MIGHT be going on with our bodies and how to correct them.

I shared recently about how I used to suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Well, because that is a condition of the digestive system/bowels I learned a lot about bowel movements and how you can tell a lot about your overall health, what might be missing in your diet, etc from simply paying attention to what you're passing through. So even with the possibility of grossing some people out, I am attempting to tackle this topic because I think that it's an important one. Plus, I feel that I have built up a strong enough rapport with you guys to do this, right??? Haha. ***Crosses her fingers and hopes that people doesn't think she's weird!***

LET'S START FROM THE BEGINNING

What is the purpose of having to go #2 anyway? Well, a bowel movement is no more complicated that this: it's the end result of your body taking the nutrients it needs from the food that you eat and eliminating what's left over. That's it. On a basic level, now you understand why you poop.

This is obviously a very important task that your body must perform because it is the way that it rids itself of waste (what's not needed). So what happens when your body isn't properly ridding itself of its waste? You could easily become sick or even develop very uncomfortable internal problems that can only be remedied through surgery. I want to spend a few minutes talking about how what you're putting in your MOUTH can affect (either positively or negatively) what you're letting go of at the END of the digestive process and what you can do to fix any potential issues.

HARD - IN PIECES - HARD TO PASS:

Easy terminology: constipated. You knew that, right? Well, some people think that because they go everyday they're not constipated. But if what you pass through is constantly hard and is in bunches of tiny pieces, chances are you are constipated. The most common culprit of constipation is lack of fiber. In our society this is actually going to be quite common, sadly. Everyone is always concerned about how many calories you're taking in or how much protein you're getting and we forget about fiber. The average US adult only downs about 15 grams of fiber everyday. That's a far cry from the recommended 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men. The best way to figure out if lack of fiber might be your culprit is to keep track for one week what you're taking in and make any necessary adjustments. What if you are lacking in fiber? What options do you have to improve it? Before you reach for that Fiber One bar whose third ingredient is sugar, think natural and unprocessed. Fruit, whole grains, beans, and nuts are amazing sources of fiber to get things moving correctly.

BLACK - BRIGHT RED

This isn't something you want to ignore. This is a for-sure indicator that the presence of blood is somewhere in your G.I. tract. It doesn't always indicate the worst-case scenario (it's sometimes as simple as hemmoroids that you can treat fairy easily), But it could also indicate a stomach ulcer or colon cancer. Because you don't know for sure, you're best to get yourself checked out by your doc. That isn't something you want to let linger to see if "it'll just run its course". Our bodies are amazing machines and they are designed to give us signs to help us identify certain problems.

VERY LOOSE - BUT NOT QUITE DIARRHEA

This could be an indication of certain G.I. conditions like IBS (the one that I used to experience) or even Celiac's Disease (which is like IBS at an extreme level). It's estimated that over 80% of Americans who have Celiac's Disease don't even know that they have it. With Celiac's disease your body is unable to tolerate gluten. You're unable to absorb nutrients from the foods that you eat as the gluten destroys the villi (the tiny, fingerlike protrusions lining your small intestines). This directly contributes to the loose stools that you experience several times per day. The problem isn't just the discomfort and the frequent trips to the restroom that can be very disruptive to everyday life, this condition can also contribute to fatigue, pain, bloating, and even depression because you're missing out on vital nutrients in the foods that you're eating. Best course of action: have your doctor screen you for Celiac's Disease or IBS.

FLOATS INSTEAD OF SINKS

This indicates that you have excessive gas in your digestive tract. This can actually be the culprit of healthy foods in your diet (cabbage, beans, sprouts) and this isn't cause for concern. However, if this is an everyday thing for you it indicates that something in your body is preventing it from absorbing fats from your diet. For instance, inflammation or an infection in your pancreas can prevent you from producing enough digestive enzymes. A food allergy could also be affecting that absorption. This will be something you'll want to bring up to your doctor. Absorption of nutrients is a crucial part of what our digestive systems are designed to do.

SMELLS OF SULFUR/ROTTON EGGS - DIARRHEA

This COULD be an indication of giardia, which is a parasite that lives in fresh water. So if you went dipping in the lake, went camping, or drank water that wasn't purified recently, you might want to get checked out if you're experiencing this. Of course, this could also indicate a bug that you're battling at the moment as well. But if this is a chronic, regular condition for you, I would suggest having it checked out.

PENCIL THIN

We're back to the issue of constipation again. Or, worse, this could be an indication of rectal cancer. Like we talked about before, if you're seeing this over the course of a few days, add some fiber in and more than likely it will improve. But if it doesn't with the fiber uptick, you should definitely get checked out. A colonoscopy will more than likely be ordered to ensure that you are clear of anything deadly.

HEALTHY - NORMAL

Ok, so we've talked about what we don't want to see. So how is it supposed to look if everything is operating correctly in the body? You should expect to see: medium to light brown, smooth and soft and in ONE piece, about 1-2 inches in diameter and up to 18 inches long, S-shaped (essentially conforming to the shape of your small intestine indicating easy passing), natural smell (not saying it will smell good....don't get it twisted....but it shouldn't be repulsive either, uniform texture.
_________________________________________________________________________________

So there you have it....that's a brief run-down of what you should be looking for. I'm sure you're asking yourself, why the heck did Quiana choose to cover THIS topic? Well, at the risk of being looking at as weird or taboo, I feel that this is something imporant for us to all be aware of in our own bodies. Like I said in the beginning, our bodies have an amazing way of telling us what MIGHT be wrong so that we can seek professional assistance if needed. We are so nutirionally starved in our society that a lot of these conditions are common and people just think they're normal when they're not. The good news is that with the correct diet, the correct amount of water, and some activity this can be controlled. You should eat a diet with a good variety of clean foods like fruit and vegetables, nuts, whole grains (except for instances of Celiac's Disease), etc. Eating processed foods as minimally as possible will also help to prevent a lot of these conditions, which can ultimately contribute to a lot of health problems.

PiperWai Natural Deoderant - Official Review

PIPERWAI DEODERANT OFFICIAL REVIEW!

You want me to use natural deoderant? What am I, a hippie?
Well, I think I might well be turning into one. Haha. I like vegan food. I like eating raw food on occasion. I believe that food should be our main source of medicinal relief before we ever get to synthetic. I love essential oils and how they can naturally treat different conditions. And more and more I'm more conscious about what kind of chemicals are in, not only my food, but my everyday beauty supplies.
Enter the world of natural deodorant. When I first started looking into this I was extremely hesitant to try it! I mean, I workout pretty much everyday.....will this stuff even keep me dry and smelling good? There are seriously a TON of natural deodorant products on the market. I kept hearing about PiperWai, especially after their appearance on the hit TV show "Shark Tank." I saw that they had a coupon available to be able to try it for the first time, so I went ahead and ordered it so that I could give it a go.
Here are some facts from Piperwai's website: (www.piperwai.com)
  • Activated Charcoal Absorbs Wetness - Activated Charcoal can absorb 1000x its weight in moisture.
  • Neutralizes Odor Naturally - Creates a pH balanced environment that keeps you smelling fresh.
  • Gentle Sensitive Skin - Packed with skin conditioning ingredients that won't cause irritation.
It's also Certified Vegan, Cruelty Free, and Made in the good 'ol USA!
The ingredients are amazing natural (organic coconut oil, shea butter, and pure vitamin E) so you can feel confident putting it on your skin.
-But why should I ditch my other, cheaper store deodorant?-
Well, here's the thing....I'm not in the business to convince anyone to do anything. Everyone has to make a choice for themselves. Personally, I'm tired of looking at ingredient lists and foods and beauty/personal hygiene items and seeing more chemicals than I can count. Am I perfect on my quest to eliminate chemicals from my daily use? Absolutely not! But why not do what I CAN to start!
One of the biggest concern about the over-the-counter deodorant is the presence of aluminum. Aluminum compounds actually clog and or close pores to prevent the release of perspiration. This can cause unpleasant side effects like inflammation and also the gross build-up of bacteria. And did you ever wonder why your clothes build up that nice yellow color in the armpits? That's actually the direct result of the presence of aluminum compounds. Another thing to consider is the fact that the cause of a lot of our illnesses seem to be directly connected to the abundance of chemicals in our everyday life that we are exposed to by what we consume and apply.
So my next question to myself was, which one do I choose? I need something to withstand my daily sweat, but that still smells good, and keeps me dry. That's where PiperWai came into play. The name just kept coming up and I was hearing positive feedback from people I knew who were active like me. So I went ahead and ordered my first tub of it.
My official review:
VALUE: Hnestly, I feel that the value of this product is really good. I paid just under $15 including shipping and handling. You only use about a pea-sized amount under each arm, so I can guarantee that it will last awhile. Yes, I spent less than $5 for the Dove deodorant I used to use; but it's just like my food......what's the cost of saving a few bucks now when I can invest up front a bit more and avoid different possible health issues later.
SMELL: I didn't know what to expect from the smell when I received it. Sometimes "natural" things can actually smell terrible. Haha. So I was a bit apprehensive about that. Let me tell you, this stuff smells like the spa!! I look forward to putting it on everyday because it smells scrumptious! Very relaxing and clean!
RESIDUE: None! I am happy to report that this absorbs fully into the skin and that there is no residue left behind at all! I even did a test where I pulled a top over my head AFTER applying the product (we all know what happens when you do this with most deoderants....) and there was nothing left behind on my top.
APPLICATION: I was a bit nervous about the fact that I had to apply it with my fingers because I figured that it would be messy. But this kind of ties back to the residue part of this review. It truly does rub completely into the skin and almost feels like of powdery on your fingers, not slimy or oily or anything like that.
EFFECTIVENESS: Here is the big question, right? Because I could tell you everything above, but at the end of the day if I stink and I'm wet under my arms all day, who cares! This stuff WORKS! I am not only dry, but I smell like a spa all day long! I've been using this product everyday for a week in every situation. So I've used it when I do intense workouts, when I am doing household chores, and when I'm at work. It's effective in every situation and I love it!

OVERALL:
This is a product I will absolutely keep in my life! I don't plan on going back to my drugstore deoderant. I feel that even though this might be about 2.5-3x the cost of what we usually buy over the counter it's STILL affordable and the benefits are worth it.

So my suggestion is to defintely try it out! See what you think. If you don't like it, go back to the drugstore deoderant, no harm in that. But if you're interested in applying the best quality product, this is a great one to choose!

Use coupon code LLS10 at checkout at www.piperwai.com to save 10% on your first order!

Buddha Bowl Series: Peanut Tofu Bowl

Peanut Tofu Buddha Bowl

The excitement continues this week with our Buddha Bowl series and tonight we have an Asian-inspired dish. The flavor of this was soooooo good! I know that it's Cinco de Mayo, but asian was on the calendar, so that's what we're getting.

This one took a few more steps than the others have, but man, the final product is so worth it!

Mmmm!!! The peanut sauce was so good!

Prep Time: 20 Minutes
Cook Time: 15 Minutes
Total Time: 35 Minutes
Serving size: 4 bowls

  • Tofu Bowl
  • 2 cups cooked brown rice
  • 1 cups shredded carrots
  • 2 cups spinach leaves
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil or additional sesame oil, divided
  • 1 cup chickpeas (drained and rinsed, if using canned)
  • salt/pepper
  • 16 oz extra firm tofu, pressed and drained

  • Peanut sauce
  • 1-2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
  • ¼ cup low sodium soy sauce
  • ¼ cup 100% pure maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons chili garlic sauce
  • ¼ cup creamy or crunchy peanut butter

  • Peanut sauce
  • 1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Cube tofu and place in a single layer on a non-stick baking sheet and cook for 25 minutes. If you aren't using a non-stick baking sheet, lightly spray with cooking spray. Remove from oven and place in a shallow bowl.
  • 2. Whisk together the ingredients for the sauce (sesame oil, soy sauce, maple syrup, chili garlic sauce, peanut butter) until creamy and smooth. Add ½ of the sauce to the tofu bowl and let marinate while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.
  • 3. Toss the broccoli with 1 teaspoon sesame or olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper. Place in the oven and roast for 20 minutes until just tender.
  • 4. Heat remaining olive or sesame oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add tofu, in batches, along with the marinating sauce until crispy and golden browned, about 3-4 minutes.
  • 5. To assemble, divide the brown rice among 4 bowls, top each bowl with ¼ cup shredded carrots, ½ cup spinach leaves, ¼th broccoli, ¼ cup garbanzo beans and a few pieces of tofu. Drizzle with remaining peanut sauce.

If you haven't tried tofu, I challenge you to try it out. The key to tofu is pressing it. Get all the extra water out. You can do this buy purchasing an actual tofu press, or you can always just wrap your tofu in paper towels and stack heavy items on top of it until the water is pressed out. Give this a go for meatless Monday!

Buddha Bowls Series: Sweet Potato Chickpea Bowl

SWEET POTATO CHICKPEA BOWL

The Buddha Bowl Series continues tonight! Tonight was all about the amazing flavors of seasonings! I was kind of concerned that I wouldn't like this one because I'm not a huge fan of cooked kale....I usually only like my kale raw, But to my surprise, I LOVED this one! And, boy, was this bowl filling!

My husband wasn't able to give me a review of this one yet because he had already eaten dinner by the time I got home. So his is packed up and ready to go for lunch tomorrow!

Look at that Buddha Bowl goodness!!

RECIPE: (Credit goes to  minimalistbaker.com)

Prep Time: 5 Minutes
Cook Time: 25 Minutes
Total Time: 30 Minutes

VEGETABLES
2 Tbsp olive, melted coconut, or grape seed oil
1/2 red onion, sliced in wedges
2 large sweet potatoes, halved
1 bundle (227 g) broccolini, large stems removed, chopped
2 big handfuls kale, larger stems removed
1/4 tsp each salt + pepper

CHICKPEAS
1 15-ounce (425 g) chickpeas, drained, rinsed + patted dry
1 tsp cumin
3/4 tsp chili powder
3/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp each salt + pepper
1/2 tsp oregano (optional)
1/4 tsp turmeric (optional)

TAHINI SAUCE (OPTIONAL)
1/4 cup (56 g) tahini
1 Tbsp maple syrup
1/2 lemon, juiced
2-4 Tbsp hot water to thin
**I didn't make this because I didn't have tahini on hand, so I can't speak for the taste of this sauce...but it sure sounds good!**

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and arrange sweet potatoes and onions on a bare baking sheet. Drizzle both with a bit of oil, making sure the flesh of the sweet potatoes are well coated and placed skin side down on the sheet.
  2. Bake for 10 minutes, then remove from oven flip sweet potatoes and add broccolini. Drizzle broccolini with a bit of oil and season with a pinch each salt and pepper.
  3. Bake for another 8-10 minutes, then remove from oven and add kale. Drizzle kale with a touch more oil and season with a pinch each salt and pepper. Bake for another 4-5 minutes then set aside.
  4. While vegetables are roasting, heat a large skillet over medium heat and add chickpeas to a mixing bowl and toss with seasonings.
  5. Once hot, add 1 Tbsp oil and chickpeas and sauté, stirring frequently. If they’re browning too quickly, turn down heat. If there isn’t much browning going on, increase heat. I found 10 minutes total at slightly over medium heat was perfect.
  6. Once the chickpeas are browned and fragrant, remove from heat and set aside.
  7. Prepare sauce by adding tahini, maple syrup and lemon juice to a mixing bowl and whisking to combine. Add hot water until a pourable sauce is formed. Set aside.
  8. To serve: Slice sweet potatoes into bite size pieces. Divide vegetables between 3 serving bowls and top with chickpeas + tahini sauce.
  9. Best when fresh, though leftovers will keep for a few days in the fridge.

And that's it! Another amazing Buddha bowl recipe to try out. I think I'm definitely hooked! Haha! They're just so nutritious and easy, but they make me feel like a pro in the kitchen. Haha. If you try this one out, drop me a comment below and let me know what you think!
